The act of scanning documents and the act of scanning images require different scanning resolutions.  For example, if you are going to copy a printed document with text on it from a flatbed scanner, you will require a scanner that can reproduce 400 to 600 dots per inch in the copied document for the text to print out clearly and with quality.  If, however, you are seeking to print out high quality photographs, illustrations, and graphics, you will want a flatbed scanner with the ability to reproduce 600 to 1200 dots per inch; the higher resolution ensures the intensity of the images you reproduce.

Color Flatbed Scanner:  Is Speed Really Important?

If you are rather impatient and you want your documents in a hurry, the speed of the scanner you choose should be considered since not all scanners work at the same speed.  You will also need to note that the more dots per inch that a scanner collects when scanning an image, the slower the scanning process is in terms of speed.  If you are working in an office and need to scan text documents with lightening speed, then go for the scanners offering you optimal scanning speeds.

Bit-Depth and How It Affects Image Reproduction

Getting a flatbed scanner with superior bit depth is important if you want to have outstanding image and document reproductions.  Like resolution, the higher the bit depth offered by the scanner, the greater the intensity of documents and images that are reproduced.  For photo scanning and illustration scanning, you will need a scanner offering a 30 to 36 bit depth.  For ordinary text documents, a scanner with a bit depth equivalent to 24 or above is sufficient.
